5-19-06 Dear Wisconsin Historic Society, In January of last year we were in contact regarding a title history search for my vintage automobile. It was a 1964 Buick my father bought used in the Air Force, and you provided me with information it had only been owned in Wisconsin for one year. You had searched by owner file and could match it with the person who sold it to my father. I was able to provide you with copies of the Wisconsin title because the State of Tennessee, where my father register the car, required the previous title be surrendered to obtain a new title. My question is: Would you be able to look through the Microfiche related to this vehicle again and see if the previous title that was surrendered to obtain the Wisconsin title is present? I never thought to ask this, but I have a strong suspicion the car came from D.C., which can only help me further my search if I have a D.C. title number, which hopefully is on a title that was surrendered to Wisconsin. Please let me know if you can help with the request and what information I would need to re-supply. I realize that in over a year’s time the original request is probably not easily remembered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5-22-06 Dear Owner, In order to refresh my memory, I reviewed the paperwork from the search I did last year. Unfortunately the State of Wisconsin did not retain copies of the original titles, nor did they film copies of the titles to microfiche. There would be no way for me to look up any additional information on your vehicle. Wisconsin Historic Society ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5-22-06 Dear Historic Society, I'm a little confused. Would it be correct to say Wisconsin made a computer database of what they thought would be relevant and then destroyed all the paper records they had during that time frame? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5-22-06 Dear Owner, From what my contact at Wisconsin DMV has indicated, that is correct. The filmed copies of records were sent to the Historical Society, but paper records of motor vehicle registrations and titles were not retained or sent to us for archiving.
